X-Scotia was a great success. The 30 competitors gathered at Killin, Perthshire on the weekend of 10/11 May 2008 will remember the event for its beautiful location, inspiring camaraderie, lots of blisters and some incredible performances.
The weather didn’t allow as much flying as we’d hoped so for most it was a series of glides and lots of walking – or in two cases running.
Incredibly, Steve Nash, the overall winner came home in 15hrs 42 minutes only 2 minutes ahead of second placed Paul Myerscough yet both had followed different routes and sequences around the turnpoints.
Some highlights include:
- 7 competitors completed the full course from 26 starters
- The heaviest pack weight was 25.5kg (Peter Will), the lightest 10.5kg (Steve Nash)
- Paul Myerscough had the longest single flight
- Mark Leyland carried on walking through the night to take 3rd, passing a sleeping Julian Robinson at one point
- Julian Robinson and Mark Ogden arrived together after different routes for joint 4th
- Dave Thomson spent most time in the air (27.5km)
- Some competitors slept in the open, others slept in B&Bs
- Some competitors survived on nuts and energy bars, others had a four course hotel meal
The event would not have happened and would not have been so successful without the effort of the entire SHPF organisation team, the film crew, all of sponsors who provided prizes and the Watersports Centre at Lochearnhead which provided the perfect base for the comp.
The event was filmed – further details of TV transmission and a DVD to follow.
