PASSION lives long!Safe, excellent performance, durable- the latest innovations U-Turn chief designer Ernst Strobl uses in the Passion makes it possible. “The PASSION flies in its own league, he combines competition performance and passive safety close to EN B class” states U-Turn joint founder Thomas Vosseler. The performance generates itself from the outstanding top speed, glide ratio and climb performance. From the advantage that the pilot can rely on the forgiving wing and its stability he can focus on the competition task to take advantage of the best opportunities in fighting to goal. This because he doesn’t have to focus on the wing to prevent the next major collapse occurring. Everyone who has flown competitions knows how important mental strength and trust in the gear is. Naturally the wing is equipped with the PPN and PPNplus system known from the successful U-Turn big seller models: Plastic rods take care for an optimal ventilation especially in demanding angels of attack. The PASSION is the first wing from U-TURN with the High Definition Profile (HDP) feature. “HDP means plastic rods reinforce the topsail between 45 and 80% of the profile depth. The optimum length has been researched on the computer, refined and proven by our test pilots“announces Strobl. The system corresponds perfectly with the in the THRILLER 2k11 invented High Pressure Crossport Design (HPCD), which was optimized that way it controls the ventilation inbetween the chambers that the THRILLER could reach never known dynamic and stability. This technology is used in the passion as well. These optimized crossports allow a closed cell in the outer third of the wing to improve the collapse recovery behavior of the wing. The closed cell prevents the airflow to the cell and the cell is only ventilated by the crossports. “in accordance with the HPCD it is now possible to control the airflow in the PASSION in a perfect way. That allowed us to place the closed cells where they are most effective and not there where they should have been for reason of lateral ventilation. The flight characteristics improve too by the optimal located closed chambers. While going on XC the top speed isn’t everything. To gain altitude is important too. For this part of the specification sheet the PASSION got the Brake Gathering System (BGS). This system shortens the trailing edge up to 36 cm. “This changes the wing geometry due to the higher tension in the sail” Strobl states. This gives the wing excellent climb performance and an outstanding pleasant handling never known on a wing with this aspect ratio. The miniribs in the trailing edge help to optimize the profile and prevent the so called ballooning effect. Starting and ground handling is just easy with the PASSION. The PASSION convinces not only with security, performance and agility, it sets milestones in durability too and promises fun and long lasting consistent flight characteristic. This results in several design features. There are used different fabrics e.g. 40g and 36g Nylon fabric for the top sail and hard finish fabric for the ribs and the V-Tapes (Improved Stability Technology IST). The optimal fabric is cut and sewed with the Smart Sail Cut system. This means the orientation of the fabric filaments, shoot and linkage, is dependent on the occurring load direction and orientated to the needed tensile strength of the fabric. Finally the PASSION got the SBP- system. The abbreviation stands for Smart Bottom Protection. These are half moon shaped, 7.5 cm in diameter and made of massive self adhesive 60g/m² special fabric. This fabric was invented to reduce the stress on line attachment points in the bottom sail and to reduce the tension bands on bottom sail and the ribs. This ensures the profile accuracy for years. This system is very successful in the THRILLER where the loads on the line attachments have to resist extreme high loads. The PASSION is available in 5 sizes as follows: PASSION XS TOW 60-85kg, PASSION S TOW 70- 95kg, PASSION SM TOW up to 105kg, PASSION M TOW 90-115kg and the largest PASSION L 105-130kg. All wings have 63 cells and an aspect ratio of 6.85. The maximal line length on the PASSION L is inclusive breaks 303m. The effort with the lines can be the example for the fine-tuning of the wing in general; in the PASSION with its 3 riser system are used 8 different line diameters- it can’t be better optimized in-between air resistance and line break load. The competition lines are the LIROS LTC and Edelrid U8000. When aramid meets aramid line there is used one polyester sleeve in one loop-the Line Loop Protection (LLP). The risers are made of 12mm racer band, polyester cover with an aramid core. |
