Review - Julbo Nomad Sunglasses PDF Print E-mail
Having never been one for buying expensive shades, now was the time to see if I had been missing something all these years..

I've never been one for making big fashion statements and sunglasses were no exception. Oakley, Cebe, arent they just a named version of the £20 pair you can buy in any number of shops?

The Julbo rep certainly gave us all the speel about the quality of the lenses and the robustness of the frames, but I remained sceptical about the value for money element. However the photochromic lenses of the Zebra and Cameleon range made me decide to take a pair of the Julbo Nomads to see for myself (excuse the pun).

Photochromic means that the lenses adjust to the amount of ambient light, varying between Cat 2-4  on the Zebra lenses and Cat 3-4 on the Cameleons. From a paragliding point of view I thought this would be great, with the glasses adjusting the degree of 'darkness' dpending on the cloud cover. I hate having too-dark a lens making clouds look more scary than they are and spoiling the definition.

Julbo NomadWearing them, they seemed similar to any other brand, although I liked the removable side guards as they do keep any unwanted light from straying in. They are also pretty sturdy, and are a relatively heavy shade due to the lens structure.

So how do they perform? I've had mine for most of a UK summer and have worn them almost every day during a 2 month winter in the Alps. Ive worn them for flying, skiing and chilling, and I'm not about to give them back! The quality of the lens is really excellent. They rarely seem to make the day too dark and their slight yellow tinge actually enhances overcast days. Definition is superb and they have survived admirably my not-so-careful storage and droppage!

All in all, I highly recommend them and for UK flying I would imagine the Zebra lens to be a great all-rounder. I am now a convert to quality sunglasses.
