Going on hols? Make room for your undies! PDF Print E-mail
Packing to go on holiday with a glider can be tricky, especially with airlines clamping down and charging extra for bulky items. Here Pete Morris shows you how to get your wing packed down as tightly as possible, leaving plenty of room for your groylers - or wicker donkeys on the way back!

About to go on that long awaited paragliding trip to Cyprus? Can’t get your glider in - as the missus has packed 5 bottles sun cream?

Here are some tips you may find useful – please ensure that you read before packing.

Reduce the size of your packed glider...

Standard pack versus minipack
..from this...to this

Here’s how:

  • Step 1

Lay your glider out as normal, if its windy, place a wing tip directly into the wind direction, better still do it indoors! Ensure that both sets of lines are both laying on top of the wing.

  • Step 2

Starting from one wing tip roll your glider towards the centre as tightly as possible, as you would roll a poster to fit into a tube.

  • Step 3

You should end up with a nice tight sausage shaped wing. Next, roll your glider up from the ‘leading edge end’ – contrary to your usual method.

  • Step 4

At the trailing edge end squeeze out the excess air and put your compression strap around the glider. Eh voila! Your glider is now half the size of a normally folded wing, it’s still weighs the same but is a much smaller lump.

  • Step 5

As you can see, there’s now space for your groylers! Your bag is probably easier to carry with your glider on top of your other kit. The photo below shows even in a small bag it now takes up half the space as normal with loads of space, in fact, the glider can actually fit into a small bag which can be taken on board a plane as hand luggage.

  • Step 6

Buy yourself a Sup'Air AltiRando harness/combined bag in one – this harness could change your life, just look at the difference in size.
